Historically, Cascate di Sa Spendula has held a distinguished position in Italian literature and regional culture. During a tour of Sardinia in the late 19th century, the celebrated poet Gabriele D'Annunzio visited the site and, deeply moved by its raw, dramatic beauty, composed the famous sonnet 'Sa Spendula' on the evening of May 17, 1882. Additionally, the prominent local writer Giuseppe Dessì integrated the sensory atmosphere of the waterfall, including its ambient roar and humid mists, into his classic literary works Paese d'ombre and Un pezzo di luna.
The waterfall is formed by the sudden plunge of the Rio Coxinas, a torrent-fed watercourse originating from the high peaks of Santu Miali. As the stream flows through a deep gorge of pink and grey granite, it descends in three consecutive drops, exhibiting a total cumulative altitude gap of approximately 60 to 72 metres (196.8 to 236.2 feet), with the highest single vertical drop measuring roughly 30 metres (98.4 feet). After this descent, the watercourse transitions into the Rio Seddanus.
